League age is a player's age on a fixed determination date, not their age on the day they register. It exists so that everyone in a division is grouped consistently for the whole season, even though players have birthdays partway through it.
For Little League Baseball, league age is the player's actual age on August 31 of the current season year. For Little League Softball, it is the player's age on December 31 of the previous year. The two sports use different dates, which is the single most common source of confusion.
