How is baseball win percentage calculated?
Win percentage is wins divided by total decisions (wins plus losses), shown to three decimals. A team at 18-6 has a win percentage of .750. Ties are excluded from the calculation, which is the standard baseball convention.
How do you calculate games back in the standings?
Games back is the average of the wins the leader is ahead by and the losses the trailing team is ahead by: ((leaderWins − teamWins) + (teamLosses − leaderLosses)) / 2. The first-place team is always zero games back and shows a dash.
What is a magic number in baseball standings?
A magic number is the combined number of leader wins and chaser losses still needed to settle the race. Add how many games each team plays and this calculator works it out for every team: the leader's number counts down to clinching the group, and a chaser's number reaching zero means they can no longer catch the leader and are eliminated.
How do you calculate a magic number?
Take the total games in the season, add one, then subtract the leader's wins and the chasing team's losses. At zero the race between those two teams is settled. The leader is only safe once that is true against every remaining challenger, not just the team currently in second — a team with games in hand can still pass them.

Popularized by Bill James, it estimates the win percentage a team "should" have from its runs scored and runs allowed: RS^1.83 / (RS^1.83 + RA^1.83). Comparing it to the actual record hints at whether a team has been lucky or unlucky in close games.
How does the calculator break a tie in the standings?
Teams level on win percentage are separated by head-to-head record first, then run differential, then more wins, then fewer losses. When two or more teams tie, a head-to-head panel appears under the team table: enter the games those teams played against each other and the H2H column and the standings order update immediately. Head-to-head counts only games against the other tied teams, which is how MLB and most leagues do it. If nothing separates them, the note under the table says the tie is unresolved rather than pretending alphabetical order is a result.
