Youth Football Helmet Size Chart
A football helmet is safety equipment, so size comes before anything else. It starts with one measurement — head circumference — which maps to a shell size you then fine-tune with air.
How to measure
Wrap a soft tape measure around the largest part of the head, about one inch above the eyebrows and above the ears. Keep the tape level all the way around and snug but not tight. Record the number in inches.

- Under 20.5": Youth Small
- 20.5" – 21.25": Youth Medium (the most common youth size)
- 21.25" – 22": Youth Large / Adult Small (a crossover band — try both)
- 22" – 22.75": Adult Small
- 22.75" – 23.5": Adult Medium (the most common adult size)
- 23.5" – 24.25": Adult Large
- Over 24.25": Adult XL
Shell size first, air-fit second
The chart sets the shell. Modern helmets then have inflatable air bladders you pump to remove small gaps for a custom fit. If the helmet still lifts or rocks after inflating, it is the wrong shell size — go up or down a shell, not just more air.
