How to run a squares pool

  1. Name the two teams. Put one team on the top axis and the other down the side. Everything else keys off those two scores.
  2. Fill every square. Paste your player list and fill the board randomly, or click squares one at a time to assign them by hand.
  3. Draw the numbers last. Only after the board is full, draw the digits 0-9 for each axis. Drawing early lets late buyers cherry-pick the good numbers.
  4. Set the pot and split. Enter the total pot and pick a payout split so everyone can see what each quarter is worth.
  5. Share or print the board. Copy the link, save a PNG, or print it. The board travels in the link, so nothing is stored on our side.

How do football squares work?

Every player claims squares on a 10-by-10 grid. Once the board is full, each axis is assigned the digits 0 through 9 at random — one axis per team. At the end of each quarter, take the last digit of each team's score, find the square where those two digits meet, and that square wins.

When should you draw the numbers?

Always after every square is claimed, never before. If the numbers are visible while people are still picking, late buyers can take the valuable digits and early buyers get the leftovers. This generator keeps the draw locked until the board is full for exactly that reason.

What are the best numbers in Super Bowl squares?

Historically 0, 3, and 7 are the strongest digits, because football scores cluster around field goals and touchdowns. 2 and 5 are the weakest. You do not get to choose them, though — that is the point of drawing the digits at random after the board fills.

How many people do you need?

Any number. A 10-by-10 board has 100 squares, so ten players take ten squares each, twenty players take five each, and so on. If you have fewer players than that math likes, use the 5-by-5 board instead of leaving squares empty.

How is the pot usually split?

Most pools pay out at the end of each quarter, with the final score worth the most. A common split is 20 percent after the first quarter, 25 at halftime, 20 after the third, and 35 on the final. Even quarters at 25 percent each is the simplest alternative.

Does this work for games other than the Super Bowl?

Yes. Nothing here is Super Bowl specific — the same board works for any football game, and for any sport scored in a way where the last digit matters. Just rename the two teams.
