Skill players (WR, DB, RB) and quarterbacks want low-profile pads that free the arms for catching, throwing, and covering. Bulkier cantilever pads restrict the range of motion they rely on.
Linemen wear cantilever pads that bridge the shoulder and spread impact, giving the most protection for the repeated collisions of trench play.
The pads should cover the shoulder tips and the top of the chest and back without restricting arm movement. The epaulets should sit at the shoulder tips, and there should be no pinching at the neck.
