Field goal percentage is field goals made divided by field goals attempted, times 100. For example, 8 makes on 17 attempts is 8 ÷ 17 = 47.1%. Three-point and free-throw percentages use the same made-over-attempted formula for those shots.
True shooting percentage measures scoring efficiency across all shot types. It is total points divided by 2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA). Because it accounts for threes and free throws, TS% is a better efficiency measure than raw field-goal percentage.
Effective field goal percentage adjusts FG% to credit the extra point a made three is worth: (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA. A 50% eFG% is roughly average; anything above is efficient.
As a rough guide: 45%+ field goal, 35%+ from three, and 75%+ from the line are good. On the combined measures, an eFG% above 50% and a true shooting percentage above 55% mark an efficient scorer.
