On the pitching side, the ERA and WHIP calculator does the same job.
Batting average is hits divided by at bats. A player with 28 hits in 100 at bats is hitting .280. Walks, hit by pitches, and sacrifices are not at bats, so they neither help nor hurt average.
On-base percentage is (hits + walks + hit by pitch) divided by (at bats + walks + hit by pitch + sacrifice flies). Note that sacrifice flies are in the denominator but sacrifice bunts are not, which is the detail most calculators get wrong.
Slugging is total bases divided by at bats. Total bases counts a single as 1, a double as 2, a triple as 3, and a home run as 4. Because doubles, triples, and homers are already part of the hit total, singles are hits minus those three.
OPS is on-base percentage plus slugging percentage. Roughly .720 is average at a competitive level, .800 is solid, .900 is excellent, and over 1.000 is elite. It is popular because it captures getting on base and hitting for power in one number.
Because slugging is not capped at 1. A home run is four total bases in one at bat, so slugging can exceed 1.000 on its own. Adding it to on-base percentage means OPS above 1.000 is uncommon but entirely possible.
No. A walk is not an at bat, so it does not appear in batting average at all. That is exactly why on-base percentage exists — a player who walks often can have a modest average and still be one of the hardest outs in the lineup.
